HUNT PELAGIC FISH

Perhaps the most challenging type spearfishing is drifting in bluewater; with this challenge comes the biggest reward. Many pelagic species spend their life-cycle as transient fish, with their population numbers continuously changing from one region to the next as they migrate. This wide distribution can make them an exceptionally sustainable target for spearfishing. Some pelagic species such as Mahi are fast-growing, which also makes them a sustainable target. Because of their unique behavior and scattered distribution, hunting these fish presents challenges that require a different approach for using a polespear.

We recommend a modified NOMAD Polespear for pelagic fish, including:
Wahoo - Mahi Mahi - Tuna - Mackerel - Rainbow Runner - etc.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • Pelagic fish are often very fast swimming, with very soft bodies. The holding power of your shot relies on modifying your gear setup with spectra
  • Pelagic species are usually found in blue water, and don't usually present the opportunity for a point-blank shot. Your polesepear setup will often need increased length get the distance for long-range shots
  • Targeting pelagics requires the use of a float line with float, or a belt reel setup to successfully retrieve your fish.
  • If the fish-of-a-lifetime is a large pelagic species, it may be necessary to reinforce your setup in case the fish breaks the spear

SETUP FOR LONG SHOTS

There are many different ways to rig your polespear depending on what specific species you are targeting.

You can make a standard 9ft NOMAD Polespear longer by adding an additional 2ft or 3ft mid section to the original setup. When doing this, it is best to put a Kung Fu grip on the added section so your band stretch will be the same as a NOMAD that hasn't been lengthened. The extra length will all be at the front of the polespear, without over-stretching the band.

A different option would be to add a PREDATOR Front Section to a Standard NOMAD Polespear. This gives you the exceptional maneuverability of the Predator, with the length and girth of a NOMAD.

  • 11 Foot Polespear: Standard 9ft NOMAD + 2FT Mid Section + Kung Fu Grip
  • 12 Foot Polespear: Standard 9ft NOMAD + 3ft Mid Section + Kung Fu Grip
  • 12ft Hybrid Polespear: NOMAD Rear Section + 3ft NOMAD Mid SectionPredator Front Section

SPEAR TIPS FOR PELAGICS

The fish typically targeted for bluewater spearfishing have soft-bodies; slip tips can easily tear out if not placed well, or taken from too great a distance. Cable slip tips can saw through soft-bodied fish like wahoo, especially if the fish runs or thrashes while trying to retrieve it. We recommend using our WARHEAD Spectra Slip Tip when targeting bluewater fish.

Our WARHEAD Big Game Slip Tip is a larger version of the standard WARHEAD Slip Tip, rigged with the same 1000 lb spectra to ensure your shot clears through large, round fish like tuna.

HOLDING POWER FOR
PELAGIC SPEARFISHING

Pelagic species such as wahoo and tuna typically have thick, soft bodies. To prevent your slip tip from sawing through their soft flesh or ripping out, we suggest using our WARHEAD Spectra Slip Tip. Rigged with 1000lb spectra line, this slip tip is the best option for targeting bluewater species.

Our WARHEAD Big Game Slip Tip is a larger version of the standard WARHEAD tip, rigged with the same 1000lb spectra to ensure your shot clears through large, round fish like tuna.

  • WARHEAD Injector Rod - we recommend keeping a spare for when big fish fight back
